What IS Your Rhubarb and Custard Donut?

Indulge me for a couple of minutes.

Last Saturday I ordered some baked goods from a spectacular local bakery called Bread Source.  Anyone in Norfolk will know it well.

I ordered through Deliveroo because I could not be bothered to get in the car and drive a couple of miles to their bakery counter.  And I LOVE their almond croissants.  Far too much.

At last, the sun was shining in Norwich and it was Saturday morning.  I could not wait for these luscious pieces of baked heaven to arrive.  Within 15 minutes, there was a knock on the door and a paper bag handed to me proudly boasting the name Bread Source.

The cafetiere was ready and waiting, my Kindle already outside and I opened the bag.  In it was a card saying ‘We sold out of almond croissants this morning – our apologies. Please accept these extras as an alternative. Many thanks, Ru’.

My life was ruined (I can be over-dramatic at times).  No almond croissants!

What happened next?

I peeked into the bag and in their place they had given me two apple crumble croissants.  These are actually my favourites and they rarely have them.  Never on delivery. So happy days.

But, not only had they replaced the missing almond croissants, they had added two of their amazing donuts to the bag.  Two rhubarb and custard donuts glistening in a bag.  Oh my days.  These are not on delivery either so more happy dances.

Yes, this is an expensive ‘artisan’ bakery so nothing comes cheap.

But here’s the thing.  They were unable to provide me with the goods I wanted so they went the extra mile.  Not only replacing them, but giving me two additional items AND a beautiful hand-written note.

They could have called and said ‘we don’t have them, sorry’.  And that would have been an end of it.  They could have replaced the goods ordered without any additional items.  They didn’t have to take time out to write a note and could have scribbled on the till receipt.

THIS is what I mean about delighting your patients and clients.  THIS is a tale of ‘what would the best bakery in the world do’.

And the rhubarb and custard donuts are a piece of heaven.

Going back to the beginning, what is YOUR rhubarb and custard donut?
