The September Reset: There’s Still Time to Change Your Business This Year

Does Anyone Else Think September Feels a Bit Like January?

There’s something about September.

The holidays are ending.

People are coming back to work.

The diaries start filling up again.

And suddenly there’s that unmistakable feeling of…

Right. Back to it.

In some ways, September feels more like a fresh start than January does.

And for business owners, it presents a really useful opportunity.

There are still four months of the year left.

That’s four months to change something that isn’t working, revisit something you’ve neglected or finally do something you’ve been saying you’ll get around to since approximately February.

First Things First: How Has the Year Actually Gone?

Not how you think it’s gone.

How has it actually gone?

It’s surprisingly easy to spend an entire year moving from one thing to another without ever stopping to look at the bigger picture.

So before deciding what needs to happen next, have a proper look backwards.

What’s worked?

What hasn’t?

Which clients or services have grown?

What’s taking far more time than it should?

What did you plan to do this year that somehow never happened?

There may even be things you were desperately worried about in January that turned out not to matter very much at all.

That’s useful information.

Don’t Try to Reinvent the Entire Business

This is where we can all get a little carried away.

A fresh notebook appears.

A spreadsheet is created.

There are goals.

There may even be colour coding.

And before we know it, we’ve created an enormous plan for transforming absolutely everything by Christmas.

Please don’t.

Instead, choose one or two things that would genuinely make a difference.

Perhaps your client onboarding is clunky.

Maybe you’re terrible at following up enquiries.

Your diary might be chaotic.

Perhaps there’s an administrative job consuming hours every week.

Or there’s something you’ve known for months simply isn’t working properly.

Start there.

Look at the Things You’ve Quietly Learned to Put Up With

Every business has them.

The workaround.

The spreadsheet that only one person understands.

The process involving six steps when it should probably involve two.

The job everybody hates.

The system that regularly causes problems but somehow never quite becomes urgent enough to fix.

We’ve all got them.

The trouble is, when you deal with something every day, you stop noticing how ridiculous it is.

September is a good time to notice again.

Ask your team too.

“What’s one thing we do that makes your job unnecessarily difficult?”

You might get some very interesting answers.

What Could You Stop Doing?

A business reset doesn’t have to mean adding more.

Sometimes the best improvement is removing something.

Are you producing a report nobody reads?

Paying for software nobody uses?

Having a meeting that doesn’t achieve anything?

Manually doing something that could be automated?

Offering a service that takes enormous effort but makes very little money?

We often assume growth means doing more.

Actually, becoming a better business can sometimes mean doing less — but doing the right things really well.

Have a Look at Your Money Too

Not particularly glamorous, granted.

But before heading into the final quarter, it’s worth knowing exactly where you stand.

Cash flow remains a very real issue for UK small businesses in 2026. The Government says late payments alone cost the UK economy around £11 billion each year, and new legislation is currently progressing to strengthen protections for smaller businesses.

So have a look.

Who’s paying late?

Are you invoicing promptly?

Are there expenses that have quietly crept upwards?

Do your prices still reflect what it actually costs you to provide your service?

You don’t need to spend three days creating financial projections.

Just make sure you know what’s coming in, what’s going out and whether there are any nasty surprises lurking.

Speak to Your Team

This one is easy to overlook.

If you have people working within your business every day, they probably know things you don’t.

They see where customers get confused.

They know which processes cause problems.

They know which jobs take forever.

And they probably have ideas.

You don’t need a formal away day with flip charts and corporate sandwiches.

Have a conversation.

What’s working?

What’s frustrating?

What could we do better?

Sometimes one small suggestion from somebody doing the job every day can transform a process.

And Speak to Your Customers

We talked recently about the importance of checking in with your quieter customers, and September is another good opportunity to do it.

Ask how things are going.

Find out whether their needs have changed.

Listen.

Don’t immediately turn it into a sales conversation.

Some of the best information you can get about your business comes from the people actually paying to use it.

Pick Your One Thing

Once you’ve looked at everything, resist the temptation to produce a list of 47 objectives.

Pick one.

If we could improve ONE thing in this business before the end of 2026, what would make the biggest difference?

Then actually do it.

If you finish the year with a better onboarding process, happier clients, fewer missed calls, improved cash flow or five hours a week back in your diary, that’s meaningful progress.

You don’t need an entirely new business by January.

You just need a slightly better one.

Final Thoughts

January gets all the attention when it comes to fresh starts.

But I think September deserves a little more credit.

Everyone’s back.

There’s still plenty of year left.

And unlike January, you’ve already got eight months of information telling you exactly what’s working — and what isn’t.

So don’t write the year off.

Don’t wait until January to make the change.

Have a look at your business now.

Fix one annoying thing.

Improve one process.

Have one conversation you’ve been putting off.

Four months is plenty of time to make a difference.
